Currency, SIM Cards, and Cash: What to Sort Out at Bole Airport
The practical, unglamorous stuff worth handling right after you land at Bole Airport.
Before you head into Addis Ababa, a few practical things are easiest to sort out right at Bole Airport — here's what to know.
Currency
Ethiopian Birr (ETB) is the local currency, and you'll want at least some cash for small purchases, tips, and places that don't take cards. Currency exchange counters are available in the arrivals area; rates at the airport are generally reasonable, though it's worth comparing with your hotel or a bank if you're exchanging a larger amount.
SIM Cards and Data
Local telecom counters in the arrivals area sell SIM cards with data packages, and having local data from the moment you land makes everything else easier — maps, messaging your hotel or driver, ride apps. Bring your passport, since SIM registration requires ID.
Cards vs. Cash
Larger hotels and airport-area businesses generally accept cards, but card acceptance drops quickly outside of that — smaller shops, some restaurants, and local transport are often cash-only. Carrying a reasonable amount of Birr in cash is the safer default, especially for your first day or two.
What to Do First
A practical order: get some local currency, pick up a SIM card if you want one, and then head to arrivals to meet your transfer. If you've booked a private pickup, your driver is already waiting — so there's no rush, and you can take the few extra minutes to get these basics sorted before you leave the airport.
