Addis Ababa Airport Layover Guide: What to Do in 6–8 Hours
A long layover at Bole Airport doesn't have to mean sitting in the terminal — here's how to use the time well.
Ethiopian Airlines routes a lot of connecting traffic through Bole International Airport, and a 6–8 hour layover is common. Here's how to make the most of it, depending on how much energy — and how much visa flexibility — you have.
Staying in the Airport
If your layover is on the shorter end, or you'd rather not deal with immigration twice, Bole Airport has lounges, restaurants, and shops to pass the time. It's the lowest-effort option and keeps you close to your connecting gate.
Leaving the Airport
With 6–8 hours and an eligible passport, you can clear immigration, store or carry your bags, and head into the city. Kazanchis and Bole itself have enough to fill a few hours — a meal at a proper restaurant, a walk around Meskel Square, or simply a change of scenery after a long-haul flight.
Do the Math Before You Leave
Budget realistically: about 45 minutes to an hour to clear immigration and get your transfer, however long you spend in the city, and the same coming back — plus check-in and security again before your next flight. For an 8-hour layover, that often leaves a genuinely usable 4–5 hours outside the airport; for 6 hours, it's tighter and worth thinking twice about.
Make the Transfer the Easy Part
The one thing you don't want during a tight layover is uncertainty about your ride. A private transfer with flight tracking and a driver waiting at arrivals removes the biggest variable — you know exactly how long getting into and back from the city will take, which makes the rest of the math straightforward.
